electrify cleanly: installing solar.

: the sun is shining, the birds are singing - and the electricity is flowing!

The Sun

It's pretty great, right?

It's even better when its power is harnessed to cleanly (and cheaply!) power your efficient, electrified home or commercial space. And now that we have the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, all systems are eligible for a 30% tax credit. This includes residences, nonprofits, schools, government and places of worship (who will receive a direct pay back!).

Click through the local solar resources below to find out how you can install solar on your home or business.

Considering solar? Run the numbers!

Nick & Caitlin were considering solar, but weren't quite sure it was the right investment. Then they ran the numbers. Read their story here.

How to go solar in the Missoula area

Climate Smart Missoula and partners have been working for years to help folks go solar. It is now easier and cheaper to put solar on your home or business than ever before. We are challenged by state law and policies that make it harder for renters and for "community solar," but we're working to with others across Montana to make solar available to everyone. Equity matters.

We recommend you head to Climate Smart Missoula's website for a series of resources, short videos and "how to's":
  • Solar Smart: making it easy, Missoula-style - is the best site for all you need to know.
  • Solar Made Easy: A Step by Step Guide for Homeowners - Climate Smart's PDF on the basics.

Our friends at the Montana Renewable Energy Association - MREA - have a few excellent resources, including:
  • Montana Solar Installer Directory
  • Financing Your PV System

Considering leasing?

Leasing can be a good option if you'd rather not take out a loan or pay upfront - but be sure to do your research! Solar leases offer a pay-as-you-go model, but this model is not eligible for the 30% tax credit. And be sure to check the terms carefully to understand what will happen if you miss a payment or sell your home.
