Missoula City-County Rebate Waitlist
Are you thinking about installing a heat pump water heater? Or did you already purchases one on or after May 1, 2025* and are looking for a rebate?
The City of Missoula and Missoula County have partnered to offer a local $1,435 rebate for heat pump water heaters for projects completed in Missoula County. Plus, expanded federal tax credits can likely cover 30% of project costs! (Note: the federal tax credit expires December 31, 2025.)

The City and County have received enough applications to spend all available rebate funds but are still accepting applications to be on the waitlist, in case any currently approved applicants back out. Details below.
(*Did you purchase your water heater after June 1, 2023 but before May 1, 2025? While you aren’t eligible for the current rebate level, you could still be eligible for a $575 rebate, which was funded by a previous grant. $3000 incentive for NorthWestern Energy Customers
If you're a NorthWestern Energy customer and are switching from an existing electric water heater to a heat pump water heater, you should be eligible for a $3,000 incentive to cover unit and installation costs.
Talk to your contractor or plumber about the program. They can learn more and apply on your behalf HERE. Your new HPWH must be on an eligible list and your plumber must be too. Some of the local businesses that are trained include: Apex, Garden City, Gavlak, Hellgate, High Mountain, Highline, Mickelson Plumbing, Plumb-Tech, Sentinel Mechanical.

How to apply.
If you haven’t yet purchased a water heater, you can apply today and get pre-qualified and put on the waitlist for a rebate. You will be contacted by a local government representative if funds open up. (Find a list of local retailers & installers.) If you’ve already purchased a heat pump water heater, you can get on the waitlist for a rebate if the purchase was made after June 1, 2023, pending funding availability.
